The Mr. Olympia contest was only steroid-tested in 1990, why it wasn't permanently implemented is beyond me, though I've heard of possible pressure by the WBF, a competing federation at the time that didn't impose any drug testing.
In 2001, both Jay Cutler and Markus Ruhl (both non-Weider athletes who had publically turned down Weider offers previously during the year) were "disqualified" for failing the "diuretics test". This was total bullshit, as it was clear to everyone that every competitor on stage that day was drugged to the gills. Also, Cutler was tested at a different time than every other athlete. Consequently, Jay threatened to sue the IFBB (rightfully so) if his placing wasn't reinstated. Luckily, the IFBB realised the potential for controversy and caved like the bitch it is.
I'm all for drug testing. Why doesn't the IFBB feel the need to implement it? Is it scared of rival federation starting up again? Does it fear a backlash from its fans who are used to seeing juiced freaks? In the end, money is probably the deciding factor, a sad pathetic truth, not sad for the IFBB, but sad for the competitors who have to subject themselves to unnecessary risks to practice the sport they love.
