Filtering new members

WM and others,

I am just curous as to if there is any way to filter new members through some sort of probabtionary period. I remember there being a similar function on a different board I used to frequent. I think it was about a 1 month period within which new members were restricted in terms of where they could post within forums and subforums and also could not send PM's. After the 1 month period, a notice or automated email was generated and sent to all the VIP's who voted on whether each member was a worthwhile addition to the community.

I am in now way trying to discriminate agaisnt new members, I welcome them. However I do believe that many boards have been overrun and ruined by new members simply joing to screw with people, posting idiocy constantly and the like. I think it would be a valuable addition if new members had to 'earn' status within the dungeon, just as regular members try to earn VIP status.

Thoughts?

I like the not being able to pm people thing. Or maybe something about having a certain amount of posts before you can pm. Only problem is people sign up all the time and don't post so voting people in would be a chore. It does get annoying having people with no posts trying to pm with questions or maybe with only a few posts and then never show up again.

If people come on here to screw with people they get banned. It is only annoying to get pm'd and then have them make a thread about what they just asked you but as long as they are getting information I'm cool with that.

What I usually do when people PM me for information is just to tell them to go post a thread with their question. You guys should try that as well. I don't want to set something up on here that is restrictive to new members. If people sign up and see that they're restricted in any way, they'll go somewhere else. We want to welcome them, not make them feel like they're not allowed to do things.

If anyone reads it :) I think things are going great. Lots of great, motivated, new members. Every forum will have annoying posts/members. I'm proud of our members.

youll always get the odd person who for what ever reason is an idiot, but over the time ive been here, people do get filtered, they are given a chance and then if they don't respond, they are banned. I think like webby says building in restrictions may alienate people and this proven approach works. The quality of information here and the way people conduct themselves even in disagreements is refreshing and a welcome move away from the usual standard of forums that are more like a school playground of name calling and petty point scoring. Proud to be dungeon member!

Agreed. If you look around, you see many more qualitative, active members. The site goes through phases where we get trolls, but hey, watching us belittle those fools makes it that more amusing

Anyway, this site is well modulated by Jake and Brent, so i don't think there's anything to worry about.

right, but how many questions are about the same thing, do a simple search in the separate sections for your question before you post something that already has 4 different threads on the exact same thing??

The only thing is, yes everyone would like for members to do searches, but if everyone did a search they would find the answer, there for not having barely any new threads, and than people would complain about the board being dead. Its a double edged sword.

I don't mind the repetitive questions so much. A lot of the time it's the same question with a little mix in it. THe thing that gets me is the no post people sending pm's to me asking questions. Ant the ones asking for a source. I even put a signature up asking not to do that.

^^ i get a lot of that also, many guys hit me up with questions with no posts about gear and phs. its weird. oh and the best is a source for a serm all the mother humping time.

I just had 2 different people ask me for sources in the last 24 hours. THey tell me they see all of my posts so I know they had to see my signature. Still doesn't deter them.

I agree, people love being spoon fed, but it is a double edged sword!

lol.. Yeah they basically say, where is a god source. So I say hey Jake, do something with these guys will ya..lol
