1) Are you supposed to have ANY carbs from Sunday - Wednesday morning before a contest?

2) If a protein bar has 22 g of carbs, but only 2 g net effective carbs, can I have that at any time between Sunday - Wednesday, or are we talking no carbs what so ever?

Thanks!
Jaime

I've noticed that there are a lot of companies now that make protein bars with faulty nutritional information. For example, if you look at the Nito-tech S'mores bars, the breakdown is like this:
Calories - 290
Protein - 30
Carbs - 32 (6 g fibre, 4 g sugar, 9 g net effective carbs)
Fat - 8

Now, if you use the protein and carbs = 4 cals and fat = 9 equation, it would come to 320
If you only counted the net effective carbs, it would equal 228.

Why the difference? I don't understand where the calories are...

Deaman - I'm not on a low-carb diet, I was just wondering what the truth was about how many calories are in each bar...it helps to determine how many calories to eat the rest of the day

Musclehed - I just find it hard to get in all the calories through whole meals...and I don't always like taking my food with me. Bars are easy and convenient...many are also calorie dense (like oatrageous and trioplex) so they help me gain weight

Effective (net impact) carbs mean that they cause the production of insuline which is not caused by the non effective. But the non effective carbs do have calories and, such as some alcohols, can be stored as fat.

The above was what I was trying to get at in the other thread you made regarding this topic Jaim. Couldnt figure out how to explain the alcohol's impact. Anyways, nice post Pinjo.

"Reduced Calorie Alternative to Sugar - Absorption of maltitol by the human body is slow, allowing part of the ingested maltitol to reach the large intestine where metabolism yields fewer calories. Therefore, unlike sugar which contributes four calories per gram, the caloric contribution of maltitol is only 2.1 calories per gram. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stated it does not object to the use of this value for maltitol in nutrition labeling of foods. For a product to qualify as "reduced calorie" in the United States, it must have at least a 25 percent reduction in calories. Maltitol is, therefore, useful in formulating "reduced calorie" products."

So molitol is an alcohol that is absorbed by the body like a regular sugar is, and as a result, as a negligable impact on bodyfat stores and doesn't count towards total carbs/calories in the product? Is that basically it?

i think a carb is a carb, regardless of how it effects blood sugar. protein doesnt effect blood sugar, but if you eat enough of it you will gain weight...I dont have ny proof of this, its just a personal belief.

Gumby - Bodybuilders are living proof of your theory, it's a good one! :)

Musclehed - I do have coolers and food keepers, but I also consider eating to be a social event, and because I'm in university from 8 am (my first class) until about 5 pm, I am constantly eating with my friends. And they don't bring their food.
