I was wondering when preparing for a contest when should you cut out protein shakes(i.e. whey and/or caseinate) and why, if you are including those carbs into your diet? I can see possibly cutting them out at the last week (peak weak). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. A guy that WAS trying to help me told me to cut out all shakes and stick to only meat sources for protein. It really didn't make any sense to me especially since I was not on my final week, as I believe is the time to cut them out. My show is on the 24th of June and I am just getting so damn nervous. Thanks again Gumby!

I agree with Gumby on this 100 percent, but many will still disagree. There is no reason to cut them out any earlier, AT ALL. This got started by someone telling someone who told someone, etc. Nobody can ever come up with a solid reason why it would be more effective except the "they make you hold water" and "that is what you are supposed to do" BULL SHIT!!

Your right, it is not "real" food, but then does that mean we should get everything from real food? What about every other supplement in your regiman, should all that be from food? As a competitor, most of us also have full time jobs, this makes it very difficult to just sit at home and cook all day, that is where protein shakes come in handy. Even if I had the time, I don't ever see myself eliminating shakes from my pre contest regiman.

I see your point. I am not trying to argue by all means. Just merely discussing. Maybe getting protein from "real" food could mean the difference between a top two placing and a top six placing.
All I know is that your body responds better and more eficiently to the real stuff than it does to anything packaged.
I guess as a competitor, one has to be willing to do what the "others" are not going to do. I definitely understand that it is real hectic trying to cook food but its made a real difference for me.
Hate to give all my secrets away, but liquid egg whites by the gallon have been a life-saver!

And I see the point on your part to average, it is really one of those touchy things with some people. There are pro's who take 3-4 shakes a day, and there are some who refuse to take any. I think it depends on the person. The best conditioning I have ever had I was taking 3 shakes per day. I have gone with no shakes, but have found that 2 per day is a good number for me. For anyone I help get ready for a show, I usually just have them put on one shake post workout. The one thing I will disagree on is it being the difference between a top two placing and a top six placing. I will go as far as to say, with some people, it might be the difference between first and second, but nothing as drastic as 5 spots.

I know what ya mean about the liquid egg whites by the gallon, been using egg whites international for a couple years now. Just recently switched to just buying eggs, separating the whites and drinking those, did that last contest and it saved me quite a bit of cash.

I have a friend at my gym that has been doing contests for 15 years he keeps them around but strictly after workout because it delivers the protein faster.... he said anyother tim is not acceptable because you need the "real food" as someone else said ... I'm not arguing with anyone trying to help ...and he cuts his completely out 1-2 weeks out depending on how he looks
