What you need to do is to drop the straps. Trust me. Dumbells work great for grip strength. At first I couldn't hold up the 100 pound dumbells that long, especially with my left arm, but on machines I was shrugging in excess of 300 with no problem. For me, the thinner bar on the dumbell really pushed how much grip strength I had. I only really stick to dumbell shrugs as it is. My gym has up to 150 pound dumbells.
