FREAK! This is horribly short sighted on your part. I hope you'll forgive me, but this is commensurate with saying that people with cancer don't want to live. Or people who smoke want to die an agaonizing death of emphazyma. Or alcoholics want to die waiting on a liver list, or kill an innocent family on their way to church because of driving drunk.

The fact that there may not be a genetic predilection to become obese or anorexic (or to have any evidence of an addictive personality) which - by the way - is still under debate, looses sight of the fact that there may be a mental disorder causing this compulsive behavior. Mental disorders, by and large, are no more 'chosen' than are physical ones.

As for the families (particularly of those individuals who can no longer get their own food) are certainly enablers, and are doing no favors by continuing to provide massive quantities of empty calories to worsen the condition.

On the fat cell issue, though I do have a question: I was under the impression that the number of fat cells and muscle cells were determined by a certain age. That the BF & LBM percentages are swayed only by the size of that limited number of cells. The fat cells grow as you gain fat, and shrink as you loose it, just as the muscle cells grow as you gain lean mass & shrink as you loose it. Am I off on this?
I understand that mental health can play a substantial role in SOME of obese people but surely not half of America.

You are off about the number of fat cells. Here it is straight from my nutrition book. I know that towards the middle of the book it can be a little hard to make out so I will type it out if you want just let me know.

Freak - Okay, I think we're in agreement. Your right that this can not be the problem with 50% of the population.

As for the book, I could read it just fine. Thanks for the info. But I gotta tell you, that really sucks. If I'm reading it correctly, you can grow and shrink the size of the fat cells, and you can always increase the number of them, but you can never decrease the number. What a shaft that is for people who struggle with their weight.

Now I wonder, is it the same for muscle cells. We know that we can grow and shrink their size as well, but is their number fixed, or are we always able to add to that number, when training and dieting properly?

You read it correctly that is why it is so important in the off-season to stay controlled and track progress.

Muscle cells/fibers cannot increase in number; only in size.

HGH increases muscle cell/fibre number, does it not?

In terms of lifting/dieting increasing hyperplasia the definite answer is no it does not; only causes hypertrophy.

I believe igf-1 and hgh have been known to cause hyperplasia while steroids increase hypertrophy.

igf-1/hgh increasing hyperplasia is under much debate.

Yeah, I've been reading up on the peptides as well. Sort of balance out the 'weighted' advantage of the fat cells in terms of being able to increas in size and number as opposed to the muscle cell, being able to only increase in size.

Thanks - again - for all the info.
