id give it to Yates... wider and is more proportioned. Franco's chest is too big for his arms.

lets be serious i like arnold but he's not good enough to shine ronnie colemans shoes, ronnie is at a whole different level this is a stupid question because they compete in different eras... i can name at least 25 bodybuilders from the past 15 years who would smoke the 1970's arnold. first of all ronnie is at least 50 pounds heavier and competes at 3-4 % bodyfat with striations in his glutes and hamstrings that arnold never in his wildest dreams could have achieved in those days becasue the guys back then were not as hard and dry as the guys today. Even franco was harder the arnold!!! listen im not trying to bash arnold but the ass kissing has to stop ok the guy was a seven time mr. o fine and dandy and the one in 1980 was Bullsh*t. He treated ladies as if they where a piece of meat with no respect at all he idolized Adolph Hitler and for some reason everytime you open up a flex magazine all you hear about is arnold, arnold, arnold. Then you have champions like Lee Haney by the way 8 straight sandows (more then arnold) not getting no love at all Lee haney a church going man a family man who helps the communtiy and has even has a harvest house which is like a camp that helps poor and troubled youth. This man is like a walking saint and he gets no fricking recognition... please can lee haney get one flex cover for every 25 that arnold gets. its sickeneing forget arnold everything about arnold is outdated from his ridiculous 80 sets 4 bodyparts a day overtraining workouts to his stupid little one liners that make no sense anyway.

Don't you think your taking this a little to seriously! Come on people like comparing athletes of yester year. Because in Bodybuilding you can. As for Arnolds Physique it's diffrent than ronnie's. You could even argue that if the symetrical standards of the past still existed Ronnie would not even place at an Olympia in the 70's. I prefer Arnold's built body to ronnie's any day. It's not sucking up just like quality over quantitiy LOL

This is one of the best threads I've seen in a while. It's awesome that we can compare the athletes of 30 years ago to today. Just looking at the pics and not necessarily comparing them really makes you appreciate what these guys have done for the sport. This should be made a sticky. The debate of Arnold vs. Ronnie vs. Haney etc. will go on for a long time. How about some comparison's of Dexter vs. Franco?
Dorian Yates (1995), Ronnie Coleman (2001), Arnold Schwarzenegger (1974)
One area where bodybuilders have made significant improvement over the past 30 years is back. Dorian's back started a rennaissance of sorts, where backs became a make-or-break bodypart. Ronnie conitnued this tradition. Interestingly, considering that it was not considered one of his stronger bodyparts, Arnold's holds its own here.

[IMG][/IMG][/QUOTA
Arnold back is great but look at Dorians thickness WOW!!!!!! and for once Coleman looks small. lol

IMO big Lou showed what a past Champion can look like with modern training principles and modern chemistry. (Huge Improvement I think anyway).

Again IMO this would lean to Arnold being a Champion in any era.

Now am off to bed so please continue the debate LOL.

Right on the money, my friend from the far south.
When someone compares the bodybuilders from the past with todays mass monsters they have to consider what is available to the Athletes in both eras. Just imagine Sergio Olivia competeing in the recent OLympia. He would have crushed the competition.

Uber Arnold
The Uber Sergio image I created was one of the more popular pieces we've ever put up on Iron Age. So popular, in fact, that requests to uber-size other classic physiques have flooded in. Most popular was Arnold's. It seems many of you would like to know what Arnold would have looked like if he were competing with today's advantages?

Arnold Schwarzenegger, at his peak, competed at somewhere between 235 and almost 250 pounds (He, himself, has stated that he was "almost" 250, and cut, at the 1971 Mr. Olympia). Standing about 6'1" he sported 21+" upper arms, a 57" chest, 28" thighs, and a 34" waist. As with Sergio, I decided to attempt to render what the Oak might have looked like at about 40, maybe even 50 pounds heavier, bringing him into the 290-lb. range. Considering that 6'1" Gunter Schlierkamp competes at close to 300 lbs. I don't think this would have been an unreachable goal for Arnold.

The results are staggering, even to me. Had he been able to effectively add muscle mass while keeping his beautiful proportions (in addition to bringing up his leg mass to today's standards) he would have been simply untouchable. See for yourselves.
