Last night. The gym. Doing Triceps with the rope. I look over and see a thin but muscular woman doing leg extensions but with 10 lbs weight. I know anyone can do more than that. I'm done with triceps, correction, the gym is closing for the night and I ask her what she is doing. She says:

"To move the weight properly, I flex my quadriceps to move the weight. The mind-muscle connection."

OK maybe I'm having a dumb moment here but don't you have to move your legs, quads included but NOT JUST quads to move the weight and then at the top, squeeze quads and slowly lower the weight under controlled form? Isn't that the proper way to do it?

Can you really move the weight by just flexing??

You can not move the weight just by the act of flexing. Flexing is a static action. You can flex your leg while you move it, but flexing does not require any movement of the joints.

Maybe she meant she flexed her legs while doing the whole exercise.

She was probably at the end of a workout, trying to get a good pump to finish the day. She probably is also a bit uneducated. Leg extensions suck with a heavy weight too because they put a lot of strain on the knees. Everytime I do them even if I'm hitting 12 reps my knees still hurt the next day.
