I think too often this sport is consumed by excess and absolutes. You should never do this and if this is good more is better. Most know the latter to be false but how many absolutes do you allow into your life due to bb? Think about it. Make a list and I bet it's more than you initially realize.

It is important to keep in mind that although we may be shooting for the perfect body with shape, symmetry, size, definition we must also come to realize that what is "perfect" is always changing.. we just don't slow down enough to fully realize it. How have your bb goals changed since you first started? Think about it, most of us saw a magazine with an IFBB pro on the front and wanted to be him. As time evolved we changed our goals and thoughts of what is perfect. Perfection does not exist, it is an ever-changing variable that cannot be defined.

"When you aim for perfection you discover it's a moving target." -George Fisher

You can be your best every day. Give full effort and do everything you can to reach your goals and get rid of any roadblocks/mindblocks/negative thinking that comes in the way.

"Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, full effort is full victory." - Gandhi

Enjoy the journey because everyday can be out best, it is our best, that is all we can do.

Love the quote by fisher "perfection" if you ever see it in the mirror reflected back at you is the day the the hunger dies. Therefore " perfection" should always be elusive.
The one thing you will also find is at you rise through the ranks is the expectation of others.
It is nice to be the dark horse who rises to the challenge, it is not a nice place to be the favourite because you have nowhere to hide.
If you win everyone expects it, if you lose its a shock!

Good description Moorey. I knew I could count on your thoughts.

Perfection is elusive because I'm convinced it does not exist and I'm fairly certain of it. I know I just came to the conclusion exactly 24 hrs from now but I'd really like to find something that is perfect. Not only does it do with our interpretation but the interpretation of others as well. I know this is a rather philosophical question but one that is the crux of many people's drive and/or struggle.

I am all for optimization, efficiency, and constantly improving but not chasing perfection. You can't chase something that does not exist.

Perfection: Freedom from fault or defect. An unsurpassed degree of accuracy or excellence.

I'd like for someone to bring up an argument against it or another perspective for it just to keep thinking about it in other ways. I think many bodybuilders either are perfectionists or become perfectionists.

Totally agree if in reality we seek out true perfection, then we are chasing shadows and in my opinion, we risk the possibilty of negativity about ourselves to such a degree that we no longer recognise our own individual improvements because we have set unobtainable goals.
People would say that I seek perfection, No I actually work to achieve a look that mirrors " perfection on stage and that is what I strive for.
Its imperfection that feeds our workouts, its looking in the mirror and recognising both the improvements and imperfections we need to work on. It is all setting realistic short term goals and not setting out targets like becoming a top pro at the beginning of your training.
Maybe we could say that Perfection should lie in the onlookers' eys but definately not in our own!

i think the word "perfection" is a joke to the human intellect. its really something used by people to make other people go for something that keeps morphing every second. me personally i don't care to much about perfection the only thing i want from me is a victory and give it all my effort to achieve it.

Yes Victory is the ultimate for me, but maybe being the best I can be is my victory regardless of the result

Absolutely correct, the sport is so subjective and everybody as an opinion, but as your about to find out, everybody's a winner who gets their arse in shape and does a comp, good luck bro

Yeah you summed it up perfectly. That is actually one of the reasons I never got on steroids, because I have been happy being patient and experiencing the journey, even though the gains don't come as fast.

Thanks Moorey!

Yup aside from being illegal and against Army drug policies, I just don't think I need them being "average joe"....

I am not a diehard BB'er. Call it lack of dedication, conflicting lifestyle, etc. But in response to this thread, I can say the perfection we seek can be found in our actions. Everyone's body is different, and as you mentioned, 'perfection' is always changing in terms of what the expected end result is.

however, perfection in our motions, use of our energy, protection against injury, lifting for maximum results, and nutrition, can all be achieved.

Even if only for one day I achieve perfection in nutrition, and the use of my energy, I will feel quite accomplished for that day. The end result, my body, that is something for me and only me to either approve or disapprove of.

If everybody is built differently, our DNA is different, our bodies react to identical diets and movements differently, then the end result (what our body looks like) is the result of our efforts and is perfectly relative to the effort placed in our lifting, eating, sleeping, etc.

Too bad BB'rs aren't judged by their routines and nutrition!

Maybe a statue like this would better define perfection if he was doing a squat.
