from another forum
It's a question that pops up a lot on these boards, "I have this video I want to share with you guys, where can I upload it for free?". For some people, this question being asked constantly is getting quite annoying, so hopefully that can be overcome right here.
First of all, i'm going to say that for anything more than 50 MB you'll only get good results from personal webspace that you can purchase from a provider. There are free webhosts out there that offer hosting of files larger than that, but your options with these hosts become quite limited. Ok so lets get started.
ASTAHOST [ 20 MB / 150 MB ] *NEW*
After
E's Aquarium Hosting went down, I went in search of another good free hosting service with a good amount of space. ASTAHOST is one of two providers I came to settle with. They offer up to 150MB of webspace, completely free of charge. All they ask of you is that you post good quality posts in their forums. After 10 good posts, you request your free webspace, and if approved you receive a free 20MB account. Post an additional 50 good posts, request the upgrade, and if approved your account will be upgraded to 150MB of space. This free host is fantastic, offering unlimited email addresses with the upgraded account, 2GB of bandwidth per month plus more. You can even choose your own subdomain, or .com domain!
I have personally joined with them, and after posting 10 good posts in the forums, have received my free 20MB account. I plan on posting more and hopefully receiving the upgrade to 150MB. They also do require that you keep active on their boards, so if you are not prepared to stay a part of a community then maybe this host isn't a good option for you... but it is a small price to pay for such great free hosting.
1ASPHost [ 100 MB ] *NEW*
This is the second free host I came across when searching for a good alternative to
E's Aquarium Hosting. It offers 100MB of free web space, and is very simple to use after a short sign up and email confirmation. As a test I uploaded a small file (an mp3 playlist; 165KB) which uploaded fine, and is hosted perfectly. The only problem is a small, subtle ad at the very bottom of the page. You can view the link
here to see for yourself. As another test I attempted to upload a larger movie file (~33MB), but my attempt failed due to a time out. After about 10 minutes of waiting, I was told that my session had timed out, and I needed to log back in. If you have a faster internet connection, you probably won't get this same problem as me, but I personally was not able to upload larger files. It still seems to be a good, reliable host, definately worth a look at if you want large web space.
YouSendIt [ 1 GB ]
For all your files larger than 50 MB, this host is probably your best option. It's a very decent host, offering hosting of files up to 1 GB big. Only downside to this host is the link expires either after 7 days, or when the file has been downloaded 20 times, which ever comes first (i'm pretty sure these are the conditions, but I could be wrong). If you only want to send a certain file to a limited amount of people, this host is perfect. It can be used to share a file with large amount of people, but this will require you to upload the file multiple times. I might also add that this is a very simple to use host, simply following 3 steps gets your file uploaded without any need to register or sign up to them.
Note: If anyone is using this and wondering what to use the email address, use your own. The link will be sent to your own email address, which you can then share with your friends or on forums. ezShare [ 20 MB ]
For ease of use, I highly rate this host. Just simply hit the "Browse" button, locate your file and select it, then hit "Upload!". It uploads your file instantly, and gives you download links to your file, in a choice of English or German links. The maximum upload file size is listed as "20.000.000 Bytes", which is basically 20 MB. Although I have never used this site seriously, it seems to me like a perfect host for files under 20 MB. They do claim that your files will not be deleted, but I have heard rumours that files tend to be deleted from time to time. So for a permanent host, I do not rate this very highly. For a good, easy to use temporary host, it doesn't get much easier than this site.
30mb.com [ 30 MB ]
Like the website title says, this host offers you 30 MB of free webspace. I have personally used this host before, but to be honest I was not very happy with it. It requires you to register an account first, which compared to other sites can be a lengthy process. After registering my own account and logging in, I personally found the file manager difficult to use. Although it was not as straight forward as I would like, I was quite happy with the host. Up until the day I decided to upload a 10 MB file and was quickly stopped with an error message telling me the file size was too large. So, for large files this host will be useless to you. If you want to host 30 MB worth of small files, this host will do the job just fine, but I still do not rate this host highly at all.
Then there's the free hosts we've all heard of, the one's scattered with adverts. I'm going to put these all in the same catagory, because to me they are all basically the same service with different names.
Bravenet
Angelfire
Tripod
Personally i would not touch any of these sites. They provide perfectly good webspace (about 20 MB worth) but with many limitations. The main limitation stopping me from ever going near one of these hosts is the restriction of direct linking. For use on forums, direct linking is almost crucial. Who wants to go to a seperate site and locate another link just to download a video when you can click a direct link in the forums and get the file? These sites also scatter you website with advertisements, and usually pop ups. We all are annoyed by these things I'm sure.
I've tried to list the most popular free web servers available at the moment, hopefully I've been helpful to most of you people asking the ever so popular question "where can I host my video file?". If none of these free hosts meets your needs, you can try the following search site, but in my opinion the chance of finding a good reliable permanent host for more than 50 MB is very small;
FreeWebSpace.net <Search tool only
If anyone has any other good hosts they feel should be listed here, feel free to PM me with a link, or simply reply here and I'll be happy to review the site and list it here if I feel it is worthy.
GOOD CHEAP PAID HOSTING ShotHost
Offers decent web hosting solutions ranging from 25MB to 400MB at very cheap prices. Definately worth a look at if you want paid hosting!
