Brothers and Sisters,

Not many bodybuilders know that bodybuilding is the fastest-growing sport in Afghanistan for both young and old, and that Arnold’s picture is on billboards and in gyms across every major city. To many young Afghans, Gov. Schwarzenegger embodies the values of discipline, goal-setting, and accomplishment. Kabul alone has over 100 gyms, many of them with equipment made from cinder blocks and old Russian tank parts. For many it is a way establish control in a life in which you may have little control. War has wracked this poverty-stricken country for 30 years.

It is a way to establish control, if nothing else, over your own body. As an American I was touched and moved by how hard they work, how little they have, and how they want to be known for something other than war: for health and clean living. For most Afghan bodybuilders, getting enough to eat, as with most people in this country, is a big problem. Therefore you do not see the size we are used to in other countries, but you do see the hard work and almost heart-breaking dedication. I have put together some links to interesting articles on this phenomenon, as well as links to some videos and documentaries. It is at the non-profit group’s website “Jobs for Afghans”. This was a real eye-opener for me.

Trailer to film documentary “Afghan Muscles” here MUST SEE:

this is kinda a hard one to respond to, while i admit that i dont know all that much about the afghan people as a whole nor do i understand what they go through in daily life since it is so much different from life in the U.S.A or other parts of the globe, i find it hard to swallow the points of paying money to a people that are so willing to pick up a weapon and kill, bodybuilding aside ,its part of their own government and the ideals that they have, that causes their nation to be poor, sorry but the web site you directed me to was nothing but a campaign for the afghan people, so we pay them instead of the Taliban,, seems we are paying plenty with the lives of our own soldiers. sore subject i`m afraid, and ill timed,, dont mean to sound harsh but thats just my thoughts.. props to the bodybuilders and anyone anywhere that is trying to better their lives,

I understand it's tough one to swallow, and I appreciate your thoughts. My concern is getting this war over with so people like my son-in-law can come home, and the bottom line is we're not going to shoot our way out of it. When even the generals agree on this I think we should listen. It's not exactly that they are so willing to pick up a gun for pay, it's that if my children are literally starving, I will do anything I have to to feed them. One out of four children dies before the age of 5 there, and in some places last winter people were literally eating grass. When you have a guy like General Petraeus saying we need to give them another way to feed their families, that's pretty potent.

I think we can go a long way toward winning by giving them a helping hand. The idea of wild-eyed America-haters are blown apart by this documentary, in my opinion. It would be a shame to lose this country to extremists when it seems most of the people come closer to having American values than most Middle East countries. The business about covering up women only really took hold when the Taliban took over in the Nineties, which was a response to the lack of law and order when the warlords were fighting. Before that women were doctors and professionals.

Of course there are hard-core Taliban who will only understand being "martyred", but they are the ones paying these kids to fight while they themselves hang in the background. Why not pay the kids to do something else to free up forces to go after the hard-core, I say. It's just good war-fighting policy. Sun Tzu in the Art of War says you weaken your enemy any way you can before attacking, including causing defections of his men.

Peace through sport.

good point. Good discussion, I appreciate the feedback. I guess what I'm saying is we ARE paying plenty with the lives of our own soldiers, and that is what I would like to see stop. What I found out as I studied this subject was that for a tiny fraction of the cost of all the military hardware, we could fund programs which would absolutely decimate the Taliban insurgency by paying these guys 5 bucks a day to repair roads and such, which believe it or not, is big money in these parts. All they really want is jobs. It's just cheaper, not to mention it takes insurgents off the firing line from shooting at our guys, and anything that does that I'm in favor of. I just want to win, and I don't see it happening in a place that has already kicked out 2 empires (the British and the Russians) and is called the "graveyard of empires."

These bodybuilders really put a human face on these people for me, and caused me to rethink the whole thing. Anywho, thanks again for the feedback.

Peace through sport.

these are the people who did the heavy lifting in driving the Taliban out of the country back in 2002 (was it that long ago?), and helped us in the fight against our enemy, Al Qaeda. It's not their fault if the Taliban is back, that is because they have been starving for 8 years, and all the money has been spent on military, nothing on helping them get back on their feet. Remember there were only a handful of Special Forces directing air strikes and such in the country, but when it came to the close fighting it was the Northern Alliance which stepped up to the plate. We should help them out with more than bombs now, is just my opinion. peace through sport.
