Right theres a golds gym opening in my area. Alot of my m8s have joined up and ive been there a few times pre opening to look around at equipment and that and have got to know the owner/runners. Found out today that Dorian Yates will be training there sometimes and a few other pro's and amatures and also Dorian will be opening the place on the 14th sunday in December (a week tomorrow).
They have got alot of equipment there as u can imagine and dumb-bells go up to 90kg, They have 13 benches, loadsa weight plates, two cables, two smiths, 3D smith!!!, power racks the lot, EVERYTHING basically.
My only problem is im a tight arse hahahha and im paying £384 a year at my place and GOLDS wants £500 a year, and thats just the opening offer, on sunday 14th when it opens the deal runs out at midnight and then it goes up to £790 a year AAAAAAAAAARGH.

I can see myself joining coz the equipment and the fact that yates will be there. But where as i live about a minute away from the gym im at now and the fact that i have to drive 10-15 minutes to golds is also screwing with me. I know its sad and not alot of driving coz it aint really that far but ive been set in my ways now for 3 years and you know how u can get "set in your ways" that any change is abit mind ****ing.

Anyway, what are your thoughts, what would you do?

i know man tell me about it. I didnt have a frickin clue what my mate was on about until i went up there yesterday and had a look. Basically, you know how a smith goes up and down usualy on a rod, then you flip the hooks on the catches, well this one moves up and down and backward and forward, its got bars running across the top and bottom aswell as up and down at the sides. Kinda like a power rack, where your inside it and its got catches front and back of where you would stand. Looks abit funny to me but m8y whos running it said u could even do bar bell curls on it if u wanted its that free to move around. cant say im a believer just yet, just looks like another fancy machine that some pussy thought of so they dont hurt themselves or drop the weight. But who knows until its workin fully, could be good

If your gym has everything you need I wouldnt bother to change. Why bother spending alot more money for the same ****.Who cares if yates will be there.Buy a day pass or something if you want to see him.The fact that you would have to drive 10-15 mins could very easily give you an excuse to not go on days youre late or tired.

WHHHHAAAAAAAATTT?!!??!? Backwards and forwards?!!?! Thats crazy. I've never heard of that.

The new smith machines we have (im in Pennsylvania in the U.S.) are basically, ****ing gay. Instead of having the bar straight up and down, the whole bar/guide is on a slight angle. I squatted 275 last saturday for sets of 6, and i ****ing did ONE SET WITH 90LBS on that smith machine and i thought i ****ing broke/tore my back.

I'll never use one of those again. Like red said, they are better left in the corner collecting dust.

I know what your sayin thats the argument ive been having with myself for the last couple of weeks. I have checked out tthe equipment and they ave got more to offer and there are a few bits of kit my place aint got. But on the driving side of things, i would always go no matter what. driving 10-15 mins wouldnt bother me.
The way ive looked at it is i'll be paying more for pretty much the same training, thats the argument ive been having with myself, but there are more oppotunities at golds.

I tried the new gym thing. I was sorta getting annoyed with my gyms hours and my work schedual, so 24hour seemed really sweet. So i joined, and realized almost right off the bat that the place SUCKS!!! The people that go to those "globo" gym places are ****in idiots! I just had a huge 24hour open close to me, i checked it out. I just hate HUGE gyms and all the ammentities gyms like that have cuz it attracts dumbass people! i love my "average joes gym". haha

Yeah smaller gyms are usually better because the large gyms have to cater to the mainstream - which is basically people who want to "tone" and get "fit" and are afraid of iron bars.

790 sounds really expensive. I definitely couldn't afford it.

I have always liked the atmosphere better at places like Golds, Power Shack and the like rather than your 24hr fitness, simply because of the clientele they tend to attract. When I go to a gym, I get motivated by those around me. It makes me strive to work harder to see guys bigger than me working out right next to me. I also like the comradery, something you don't find with the general public.

If all you care about is getting a good workout, then stick with your current gym. If you really care about the atmosphere and the amenities and all that stuff, go to Gold's. Personally I would stick with your current gym simply because the membership is cheaper, plus is the extra money to workout at Gold's really worth it because they have some fancy new machines, when you can probably get in a good workout at your current place?

All ya need is a squat rack, a barbell, a bench, and some weight to work pretty much your whole body.

Yeh thats the argument im having with myself. Another things is tho the jump in price, i dont wanna regret it u know, also a load of new m8s will be training there, and we've got this sorta brotherhood pac thats pretty tight and training together will be kick arse, but sayin that ive met loadsa good lads at my place and we help each other. Its just that i think there will be more oppotunities at golds like job wise aswel and gettin reckognised.
Thing is i can always cancel my contract if it dont work out
