I think its first of all a common misunderstanding that people who bodybuild all use gear. There are many fine physiques who have not used gear! Maybe the initial influence was women, but in retrospect any women who has solely been attracted by my physique are the ones who moan how much time I have to spend to look like that. For war? I supplement my weight routine with boxing training, having big muscle does nothing for you in a fight. Increased energy, many guys who do bodybuilding neglect the cardio and with increased muscle gain become quite unfit...................... So I guess my reasons are purely selfish, I love the way the weights make me feel and look, I love the atmosphere of a hardcore gym, I love taking myself to the limit and improving even at the age of nearly 51.

I started off lifting because of football, but then I learned to love it and appreciate where your body can go. I enjoy the challenge of looking yourself in the mirror and saying, I need more here and here...lets do it. The satisfaction of watching your body transform with your dedication is unparalleled. Plus, there is a sense of self accomplishment that comes along with resisting the everyday temptations of the lazy lifestyle...soda, sweets, drugs, alcohol just to name a few.

To all bodybuilders and those who desire to take your body where it has never been...I applaud you.

Thats a really good post and just about sums up my exact reasons too, except from I got into body building thru a friend who did it, not football.

like many people i got into lifting weights because i played sports throughout highschool. it started off by trying to get bigger for football and then i also started powerlifting. bodybuilding came into the limelight for me because i've always enjoyed taking a step back and looking at where i needed to add size and lose bodyfat to build what i thought was a great body. its a great sport because you rely on you and you alone to get what needs to be done done. you cant make excuses because either you achieve your goals or you fail. its all about work ethic and putting in your time to get the results you want. when you achieve those results it gets addicting. its almost like your a sculptor but instead of working with clay you are working to mold yourself into what you want.

I got into it for the same reasons, started as football, and after that was over I went straight into bodybuilding.
