a guy at the gym asked me if i play football(american) i said no and he was like but you are big u should play! i told him this is what i do this is my sport, he said "this is not a sport" so we got into a debate i told him how hard it is to be a bodybuilder dedicated, patien, hard working etc... but still he said a sport is like baseball, soccer, football,. so im going to see him again i want good reason to back it up!

From dictionary.com

"–noun
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature."

Bodybuilding is one sport that where physical prowess is required. And it is indeed of competitive nature. Of course this is a sport... if he comes back with "no, sports require working as a team" then bowling, tennis, golf.... those wouldn't be sports either

as him what he defines as a sport....

Have him hold each standard pose for 3-4 minutes straight.

If he counters, make reference to the judging in the sport of figure skating. They are judged on appearance, grace, and show. The exact same parameters bodybuilding is.

to him cheerleading may not be a sport, to each his own, you could state your point, however he still may just be a typical stubborn guy. all was stated well above, so just go about those and see what happens. best thing in a debate is being confident, so maintain that and you wont lose. if he responds with a question you are unfamiliar with then answer his question with another question, for example he may ask you what exactly the judges have to do with a sport being a sport, and your response may be, well what do you consider a sport to consist of??

Ditto that man, good response. Bodybuilding is one of the toughest sports to do, the level of dedication to compete in this sport is greater than just about any sport in my opinion. How many other sports do you have to follow such a strict diet, and workout consistently with high intensity? Only others I can think of is powerlifting and strongman, but those two sports are kind of like cousins to bodybuilding in my opinion.

Kirk, I remember in high school one of my friends got in a big argument with the cheerleaders about cheerleading not being a sport. Needless to say they got quite mad at him. I still don't think it is, but whatever.

i never thought it used to be, i have never been one so dont think that also. but i dated alot and went to a good amount of comps and i can honestly say it is a sport. they are insane. im not one to argue about it because i dont know too much, but just from having dated alot i know what they go through.we're not talking horrible high school football cheerleaders, we're talking legit teams and national status.

Yes, I think they're definitely sports.
I heard from some guy the other day that "playing WoW" is a sport- skillful, competitive and requires mental toughness, bla bla.. go figure.

WoW is NOT a sport lol.

Swimming and running are sports because they're actual competitive events like track and they're in the Olympics.
