a standard barbell can hold from what i remember somewhere btw like 1000 to 1500lbs. Diff barbells are rated differently, but from what I've heard it's about 1500lbs max

I've put 660 on a bar for my old maxing on barbell shrugs, the bar does bend, but it tends to go back, but with a slight bend in it afterwards, but nothing too terrible.

the bar you saw prolly was either old or like you said a piece of shit.

Is this what you have?

or this one:

The first one is a standard barbell, it probably weighs around 20 lbs and its 1 inch wide all the way along, I have one of these from my early years and my guess is it can't hold more than 350 lbs and that being a longshot. It would probably break since the screws are so small and look so fragile.

The second one is the olympic barbell, and the guys above me have already given a nice input on the subject
