Hi, I've just recently went on a Ketogenic diet. What I'm wondering is, they say one gram of protein for each pound of body weight. Is this really necessary? I weigh 280 lbs right now. 280 grams of protein a day seems a bit out of my reach unless I have a lot of money to spend on protein powder, which I don't. I do take whey but it requires too much of it to obtain the daily intake recommended.

Actually for keto diets you would be better at .9 per a gram of body weight. On a keto diet you can experience a 5-15 drop in water the first few weeks as well. Too much protein on a keto diet can keep you out of ketosis, 252 to start at and gradually lowering it is easier.

252 grams, not compensating for water loss. I'll also do a check through to see if it would be a better idea to go by lean body mass or by regular body mass.

If your doing CKD, which includes carb loads, and its assuming heavy excercise (with what you can do with CKD anyway) you would be doing .9 per a pound of body mass.

This is what I would suggest for you. Do a full on keto diet until you shed around 15-30 pounds. By your name i'm assuming that your overweight and perhaps obese (For now). Without knowing any of your medical problems (and hopefully assuming you dont have any), I think that it will work well for you as long as you know how to control weight loss and calorie intake.

Don't lose more than 2 pounds a week. If you like tuna, or mayo based sauces then you'll be ahead of the pack. Mayo is a great high fat base to work with for low carb sauces, and tuna is packed with protein, especially on a keto diet your appetite should be diminished to such a point where you may forget to eat a few meals out of lack of hunger.

Yes I am obese but have no medical problems. I could see some arising in the future if I don't change my daily routine tho. So .9 grams of protein for each pound of lean body mass? Or is going by my total weight alright to do like you first mentioned (252g)?

Do you think calculating my lean body mass using this is affective? healthstatus.com/calculate/lbm According to it my LBM is 159, so that would be 143 grams of protein per day. Thanks for the help!!

Hell no... thats going by the average male with 15% bf. You need to find out youre %bf and then subtract it from youre current weight. You can get it read at some training facilities or at your doctors office.

Is there any way I can figure it out on my own? Is it hard to? I'm going to have to check up on it quite often since I'll be losing weight.
