It depends really. Bodybuilding as a sport and lifestyle is very introverted while society large is about the tribe, the community, the town, the bigger picture. Alot of the sport seems very selfish and self centered, and to an extent it is, your working to build the best body you can, but as an effect of that there is a trickling down to other people where you can act as an influence.
In many cases people start bodybuilding because they are put down by others, then when they get a nice physique, people want to be around them then the people that manage their way around them see that they are focused on the sport.
In other cases people bodybuild so that they can get a girl, get a guy. Its not so black and white.
