Wireless Internet
Avis' Autonet Mobile Service unit plugs into a car's power outlet or cigarette lighter. No extra data cards or software is needed for a wireless enabled device. "Simply turn on, log on and surf," Avis says. It uses another plug for any electrical outlet, providing Net connectivity "anywhere," including hotels, restaurants and business meetings.
Where available: Beginning in March in Manhattan and at airport locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
Cost: $10.95 a day. Renters can also get wireless Internet for a fee at more than 70 Avis and 40 Hertz airport locations. Avis charges $7.95 a day; Hertz, $4.95. The locations, and other Wi-Fi hot spots throughout the USA, can be found at usatoday.jiwire.com.
