I posted this earlier today in relation to a thread started about steroid accusations.
There is not supposed to be any message in this for any body.
Take it as an interesting anecdote from me only.
But it always puts a smile on my face when I relate the story.
In about 1993-4 I went to a seminar with Dorian Yates in a Perth, West Australian venue [The Raffles Hotel for those who are interested]
This was about 4 weeks after Dorian had won the Mr O for maybe the 2nd or 3rd time
After the usual round of questions re his diet, training routine etc etc one very brave guy got up with the mic and asked:
“Do you or have you ever used performance enhancing drugs or steroids?”
Well, you could of heard a pin drop!
Dorian thought for a second and then replied, [I will try and get it as close as possible to what I remember he actually said]:
“Well you guys have all paid good money to see me here tonight, and I take it you are all intelligent, so I wont try to bull shit you. The Answer is yes, I have and do.”
At that moment he got a standing ovation from the crowd.
I for one thought “at last, we get a BB who finally admits it!” none of this “I use such and such brand multi mega pak massive weight gain supper sup and this is what it did for me”
I became an instant fan for life simply because he gave us a straight answer.
He went on to add:
“The one and only reason I use ‘roids is that several years ago I made the decision to be a professional BB.
I am blessed with good genetics and a great work ethic so I was always going to be big.
However, to compete at the very top level in this sport you need the 3-5% advantage that roids can give you.
I would have been kidding myself if I had tried to compete with out them and to think that my competition was not on them as well”
He also added:
“Unless your training schedule is perfect, your diet perfect, you give it 110% every time you set foot in the gym then using steroids will not only have a limited affect but will waste your money and could damage your health.
Get those first 3 things sorted before you consider roids, as they are and will always be the key to being a success in the gym”
Several months later I went to see Flex Wheeler.
He was asked he same question.
His answer was “I am sorry but I am under contractual obligation not to answer that question and I have instructions not to answer any questions about supplementation at all”
