First off, sorry. Not sure where this topic goes so im going put it here.

I do a lot of Muay Thai and my coach is considering starting to put me in a match or two. My major downfall (IMO) is my punching power. I can hit on target but i dont feel any power going into it, especially with these massive gloves on!

I was wondering what muscle groups I want to train to get a much stronger punching power since everyone loves to see a good knockdown/knockout!

Could someone give me a few good upper body exercises for a good strong punch?

u need to strength your whole body...i agree with cook. punching power comes from the hip, where as raw power comes from chest, shoulders & tri's...keep on hitting the bag till your arms feel like they're gonna drop off...i did muay thai for nearly 18 years...

Thats why I wish i had a bag! That'll do me wonders! I know power comes from my legs which is why everyone at our camp has huge calfs and quad lol.

What I meant was, there may be places when you're in close (or trapped in a corner) and there isnt much room to start off at your legs and push through.

In muay thai what kind of punching style is it more of? Traditional boxing or karate style?

punching in kickboxing is like trad boxing but in a slightly different from...karate is mainly punching from the hip & shoulder...kickboxing you use your whole body...maximum power with little enery
