I started because I was almost 300 pounds (not muscle at all) and wanted to lose weight...now I'm 240 and all I want to do is gain weight (not fat). Probably the main reason though is that I've always wanted a big set of arms, there is something about a big set of arms that just makes you stare and think "wow"

as per the gym being addictive... fcuk yes, i remember getting to the point in school when i'd be itching to get the fcuk out of 8th period to go lift. The best addiction i've ever had.
