I was in the gym training traps and this guy came up to me and told me to keep my rhomboids pinched together, or keep my shoulders back as im doing shoulder shrugs. Was he right?

I always keep my hands at a neutral position. Dumbells always make the movement feel more natural as well.

I use a shrug machine. First facing the machine, so that my shoulder follows slight arc forward, then facing away from the machine, working a rear moving arc. This way I hit them from two different angles. And just for good measure, I hit the smith machine, close grip, to really burn them out

if you dont have a shrug machine a possible subsitute could be a flat bench press machine.

i've found for myself pinching my shoulder blades together helps for a bigger burn... i also use a wide grip when doing front bar shrugs...

currents trap routein:
haney (behind the back) bar shrugs: 4 sets 15, 12, 8, 8 reps
Front bar Shrugs: 3 sets 20, 15, 15

i really feel the burn when i put front shrugs after the haney sets. pinch ur shoulder blades together and keep your chin up. you'll feel it within a few hours after you're done lifting!!

I never liked barbell shrugs, they feel uncomfortable and like i'ts not working my traps directly. I'll be using 150 pound dumbells when I get up being strong enough to hold them without dropping them after 2 reps.
