Sorry to hear about your friend,
Now; question; has he gone for hand - wrist recovery therapy? if so, how much time and what results he got? If not; this is the first place I'd go, if it was a bone fracture or worse an exposed fracture; therapy is mandatory since tendons and cartilagues were severely damaged; plus the fact that having a limb without movement for long periods make them weak and tight so when you try to do what you used to you realize it is not the same thing; hurts like hell. But this is just a recovery phase.
Unless... there was a fault recovery and your friend thinks wrist has healed when not completely or healed in a bad form (X rays will tell you this)
